Once you have entered the webcast page, you will be able to access the Home, Agenda and Links tabs. These will help you follow the meeting as it progresses. If you are watching the recorded webcast, click on the agenda item of interest and the webcast will go straight to that part of the meeting.

In the bottom left of the live webcast screen, you will have the opportunity to send us your comments, by clicking on the 'feedback' button.

Introduction

What is a webcast?

Simply put, webcasting is like showing a television program, only in this case it is done through the internet directly onto your computer. Quite often, webcasts are live, happening in the same way as the Last Night of the Proms, X-Factor or a football match would be broadcast on tv.

Opening up Council meetings to the public

Webcasting council meetings are just one way to improve citizen participation, increase engagement and improve communications.

We regularly webcast our Full Council meetings, which take place on a monthly basis. Now in development is a wider program of committee meetings, events, and messages that we hope will further improve communication and connection to the public.

The intention of webcasting is not only to broaden opportunities to engage, but to allow the public to see how decisions are made at committee meetings, in a more accessible, open and transparent way.

As an ongoing development, over the next few months we will be putting together a program of meetings and events to be webcast. We already go out live for Full Council and have recently started to do the same for Cabinet.

Cllr Palfreeman The Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Eric Firth, said: "This is an important step in opening up democracy and enabling more local people to feel they can take an active part in how their area is run by giving them easier access to meetings."

Leader of the Council, Cllr Mehboob Khan, added: "Webcasting Cllr Khan provides an opportunity to open up the council’s democratic processes to local people. I look forward to the extension of webcasting to Cabinet meetings in the near future which provides a chance to see decision-making in action. I hope as many as possible will engage, both in webcasting and in the other methods that already exist to influence decisions. The majority of our meetings are open to the public and agendas, reports and minutes are published on our web site. Local people can also ask questions, submit petitions and make deputations."
